Winter vomiting bug25 January 2026 (by Michaela Gale (mgale)) |
A winter vomiting bug (norovirus) is currently circulating in Wigan, causing sudden sickness, diarrhoea, fever and aches.
Symptoms typically last 2 to 3 days, with recovery usually managed at home through rest and fluids.
You must stay off work or school for at least 48 hours after symptoms stop to avoid spreading it
Key advice and information
*Treatment: stay hydrated with water or squash (avoid fizzy drinks for children) and take paracetamol for fever
*Prevent spread: wash hands frequently with soap and warm water (alcohol gel does not work)
*When to seek help: Contact NHS 111 if symptoms last longer than a few days, you cannot keep fluids down, or you show signs of severe dehydration
*Local guidance: Do not visit hospitals or care homes in Wigan if you have symptoms
